Sugar Cookies
Whenever company would show up grandma would whip up a cake. That's why those recipes took prominence in her handwritten cookbook I'm sure. But what I remember most on those weekends when I'd visit was her cookies. I'd sit on a tall stool and watch her work at her baking cupboard. And the second section of this notebook of handwritten recipes is indeed cookies. She starts with one of her all-time favorites - sugar cookies. As with other recipes that were most used - what is given is merely a list of ingredients with just a hint of instruction.
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 cup lard or butter
2 eggs
pinch of salt
Beat to a cream then add:
1 cup buttermilk or sour cream
1 tsp. soda
3 tsp. baking powder
flavoring
flour to handle nicely
Do not roll out too thin.
