Soft Molasses Cake

This is the last recipe in the cake section of grandma's notebook.

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup molasses
2 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. soda
1/2 cup milk

Cream shortening, add sugar slowly, beating continually; add egg and molasees; sift together flour, baking powder, salt and spices; add 1/2 of flour mixture to creamed ingredients; add milk and remainder of dry ingredients. Mix well. Bake in greased shallow pan in moderate oven about 40 minutes.
