Red Velvet Cake with Frosting

1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. butter flavoring
1 1/2 oz. bottle red coloring
3 tsp. cocoa
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and flavorings. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to first mixture. Alternately add flour and buttermilk. Mix baking soda and vinegar and add to batter. Blend. Bake in two 9-inch cake pans in a moderate 350 degree oven for 30 - 35 minutes. Cool and frost.

Frosting
3 Tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup milk
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. butter flavoring

Cook milk, flour, and salt until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool completely. Cream shortening and suagar and add flavors. Combine with first mixture and beat well.
